Merkmale

Verbreitung

Tropen und Subtropen Europas, Afrikas, Asiens und Australiens (GBIF), seit 1971 bekannt aus Kolumbien (Hallmann & Sanchez 1982) und seither Ausbreitung in der Neuen Welt (Sarazú-Pillado et al. 2024).

In Europa im Mittelmeerraum bodenständig, in Mittel- und Nordeuropa seit den 1980er Jahren ein Einwanderer. Erstnachweise 1984 in Dänemark, 1995 in Großbritannien, 2004 in Schweden, 2005 in Irland, 2006 in den Niederlanden und Belgien (Schaffers 2009) sowie 2017 in Deutschland (Segerer et al. 2017). In Großbritannien seit 1995 ein seltener und unregelmäßiger, seit 2008 ein alljährlicher Einwanderer (Parsons & Clancy 2023).

Lebensweise

Die Larven leben in einem Gespinst, von dem aus sie an Blättern, Blüten und Früchten von Sesam (Sesamum indicum) (Sarazú-Pillado et al. 2024), Spießblättrigem Tännelkraut (Kickxia elatine) (Murria & King 1999) und Pedalium murex (Saravanaraman et al. 2016) (Sesamgewächse, Pedaliaceae) sowie Großem Löwenmaul (Antirrhinum majus, Wegerichgewächse, Plantaginaceae) fressen (Singh & Cheema 1984).

Bestandssituation und wirtschaftliche Bedeutung

Antigastra catalaunalis ist weltweit ein potentieller Schaderreger in Sesamkulturen (Sesamum indicum), so in Indien (Selvanarayanan & Baskaran 1996), Äthiopien (Gebregergis et al. 2016), Griechenland (Simoglou et al. 2017) und Mexico (Sarazú-Pillado et al. 2024).

Diese seit einigen Jahren zunehmend in Mittel- und Nordeuropa festgestellte Art (Schaffers 2009) wurde 2017 erstmals in Bayern und Deutschland nachgewiesen (Segerer et al. 2017), 2020 auch in Baden-Württemberg und 2024 im Saarland (Schmetterlinge Deutschlands).
