Merkmale

Adulte: Mit einem paarigen Tympnalorgan im vorderen, ventralen Bereich des Hinterleibes.

Larven: Bei den meisten Arten sind die beiden vorderen Bauchbeinpaare reduziert, so dass die Tiere zur Fortbewegung den Körper krampenförmig zusammenziehen, den Vorderkörper vom Untergrund lösen, vorstrecken und dann den Hinterkörper heranziehen, so dass sich der mittlere Teil des Körpers wieder krampenförmig aufstellt. 

Diversität und Verbreitung

Die Familie ist weltweit mit etwa 24.000 Arten verbreitet (Scoble et al. 1995; Rajaei et al. 2022).
